These images show members of the Ku Klux Klan as they want to be seen, scary and secretive and waiting in the wings for Barack and his colour-blind vision for America to fail. Anthony Karen, a former Marine and self-taught photojournalist was granted access to the innermost sanctum of the Klan. He doesn’t tell us how he did it but he was considered trustworthy enough to be invited into their homes and allowed to photograph their most secretive ceremonies, such as the infamous cross burnings.
When he talks about the Klan members he has encountered he tends not to dwell on the fate of their victims. Karen’s feat is that he takes us to places few photojournalists have been before, into the belly of the beast. The scenes he presents portray a kinder, gentler Klan. The mute photographs present an organisation that is far less threatening than the hate group of our popular imagination. Consciously or otherwise, his photographs hold our imagination in their grip while doing double duty as propaganda for the extremist right, much as Leni Riefenstahl’s work did for the Nazis.
Today the Klan is a mere shadow of what it used to be and there are at least 34 differently named Klan groups. “They are a fairly low-rent bunch of people, many of whom use their local organisations as a way of raising money for themselves,” says Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama.

Kenya is facing a crisis in its tourism industry after a second kidnapping in less than a month from the holiday islands near the country's border with Somalia. The attacks have brought the chaos of war-torn Somalia, about 60 miles to the north, into the chain of tropical islands popular with well-heeled tourists and celebrities.
Marie Dedieu, 66, a disabled Frenchwoman, was being held captive in neighbouring Somalia last night after she was dragged from her beachfront bungalow on the Lamu Archipelago on Saturday. Kenyan authorities claimed that its coastguard had exchanged fire with the kidnappers but that they escaped in a speedboat into the mangrove forests of Ras Kamboni in southern Somalia.
Britain and France responded to the abduction by warning their citizens to avoid any "non-essential travel" inside Kenya within 150km of the border with Somalia. Meanwhile, Kenyan police said yesterday they had arrested a security guard from the island of Manda where Ms Dedieu was taken. Briton Judith Tebbutt, 56, from Hertfordshire, is being held inside Somalia after being snatched from a nearby island on 11 September, in an attack in which her husband David was shot dead.
Kenyan authorities have blamed militant Islamist group al-Shabaab for the latest attack. Similar claims made in the wake of the Tebbutt kidnapping proved false and she is believed to be being held in central Somalia by a pirate gang.
Kenya's tourism minister, Najib Balala, said it was time to "destroy" the Somali militants: "If we have to go across and attack them, I think it's high time we do that."
Witnesses on Lamu said the gunmen on Saturday appeared to have been tipped off and beached their speedboat rights outside Ms Dedieu's bungalow and stormed in demanding the "foreigner". The wheelchair-bound pensioner was then dragged from her bed. "We just heard that everyone should lie down and they took her and drove off with her," said Ms Dedieu's Kenyan partner John Lepapa Moyo.
Kenyan officials said last night that Mzee Aboudi, the security guard who alerted the police, had been arrested in connection with the kidnapping. Similar arrests were made of two local men following the assault on the Tebbutts.
Ali Babitu Kololo, who worked at the resort where the Tebbutts were staying, has pleaded not guilty to two charges. He has denied the abduction of Mrs Tebbutt, and a charge of robbery with violence. A second Kenyan man, Issa Sheck Saadi, is expected to appear in court later.
Yesterday, holidaymakers were already leaving Lamu, while others cancelled bookings as Kenya's bungled response destroyed confidence in security. Whereas the attack on the Tebbutts happened on the northern fringe of the archipelago, this weekend's raid struck a short windsurf-ride away across the lagoon from Shela, the heart of the islands' holiday trade.
"It will really hit us big this time," said the manager of Amber House, a hotel in Shela. She said they had received a cancellation and were expecting more.
"Who wants to go on holiday in a trouble spot?" asked the owner of another hotel who did not want to be identified.
There is widespread anger among locals involved in the tourist trade at the slack response of the authorities to last month's attack. Residents said there had been sightings of suspicious boats in the area prior to Saturday but nothing had been done.
The Coast Province police chief, Aggrey Adoli, confirmed that the attempted rescue of Ms Dedieu had failed: "We have not managed to get her back but we have adequately secured the border to ensure it does not happen again," he told AFP.

(Reuters) - American student Amanda Knox tearfully begged an Italian court on Monday to acquit her of murdering her British roommate during a brutal erotic game, saying she was paying for a crime she did not commit.
"I did not do the things they say I did. I did not kill, rape or steal. I was not there," she said, trembling and sobbing during her final plea to the court for freedom after nearly four years in jail.
"I want to go home. I want to go back to my life. I do not want to be punished. I do not want to be deprived of my life for something I did not do, because I am innocent," she said.
The Seattle native and her Italian boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, are fighting a 2009 verdict that found them guilty of murdering Leeds University exchange student Meredith Kercher during a drug-fueled sexual assault.
Kercher's half-naked body, with more than 40 wounds and a deep gash in the throat, was found in 2007 in the apartment she shared with the American student in this Umbrian hill town.
The panel of two professional and six lay judges retired to consider a verdict immediately after Knox's final plea. Their decision is expected after 8 p.m. (2 p.m.) on Monday.

WASHINGTON: Michael Moore, clad in customary baseball cap, a black T-shirt, baggy trousers and white sneakers, strolled into the neo-Gothic splendour of Georgetown University’s Gaston Hall and began to preach.
“We as Americans have allowed a very small group of people to be highly skilled practitioners of one of the seven deadly sins,” he told his youthful and multinational audience on Friday, “and that sin, of course, is greed.”
The Oscar-winning filmmaker, author and scourge of the American Right was schooled by Roman Catholic priests and after noting that Georgetown, whose main campus is in the eponymous, wealthy district of the US capital, was founded by Jesuits he scolded the inequalities pervading the modern day United States.
Back in the 1960s and 1970s, when he was growing up in the motor city of Flint, Michigan, the rich paid high taxes, but still lived well, he said. So too did the not-so-rich who had good homes, free education and job security.
Not so today, said the director of “Bowling for Columbine,” “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Sicko” and “Capitalism: A Love Story” who is touring the United States and Canada to promote his just-published memoirs, “Here Comes Trouble.”
“What on earth got into us in these last 30 years where we thought we were doing ourselves good by creating a society that’s filled with so much poverty?” he asked, recalling the record 46.2 million Americans now living in poverty.
“What part of what Jesus said had to do with kicking people out of their homes?” he said, citing a record number of foreclosures triggered by sub-prime lending and the ensuing global financial crisis.

A major security vulnerability has been discovered in recent HTC Android phones that would make the recent location tracking issue in iOS seem trivial in comparison.
Discovered by the people at Android Police along with Trevor Eckhart, this issue plagues HTC's latest Android phones such as the EVO 3D, EVO 4G, Sensation and Thunderbolt.
What is happening here is that these HTC phones are logging user data such as email addresses, SMS data, location, phone numbers, system logs, etc. thanks to a suite of logging tools installed by HTC in the latest updates to these devices. But while simply collecting the data may not be bad enough, the devices unfortunately make this data accessible to any application that can connect to the Internet.
This would allow someone to write an application that would take advantage of this vulnerability and misuse that data and who knows, they may already be doing that. Android Police believes that there is enough information in there to clone your device.
There is a lot more to this than what we have discussed here and we would urge you to visit the source link to get complete lowdown. It must be said that this is deeply troubling and the full blame falls on HTC. After failing to initially respond to Trevor's attempts to contact HTC, the company has now finally responded on the matter and assured that they are working on it. Hopefully a fix is issued soon.
Do note that this issue is only faced on the latest HTC devices running the latest firmware. If you have an older device or a newer rooted device running a custom ROM then you have no reason to worry about.

A lot has been written with regards to what features we might possibly see make their debut in the upcoming Apple iPhone 5. There have been numerous guesses – some stemming from reports coming from alleged “inside sources,” while others - from the blogosphere's observations of how the manufacturer has been upgrading each subsequent iteration of the product.

The sad truth, however, is that currently no one, except for select Apple employees, has a real idea of what the iPhone 5 will be like. That's why we arrived at the conclusion that it'd be best to offer you a balanced mix of stuff, which is highly-probable to make rounds with the iPhone 5, while at the same time briefly venture out of that safe zone to offer you a taste of our own, personal wishes. Of course, there's no guarantee that any of these will happen, but... well, October 4 is right around the corner, so everything will be clear very soon either way.

Bigger screen

Well, it's not a secret that this is probably the number 1 most desired feature right now. Apple's App Store features some truly amazing content - from really robust and feature-packed productivity apps, to graphically-intensive 3D games, which, many would argue, that just cry to be viewed on a bigger screen. We agree.

When the very first iPhone was launched, there were no such games, and no such capable apps. Its 3.5” screen was among the biggest out there, and was perfectly fine. Nowadays, things stand a bit differently. We have all this amazing content, which could be better enjoyed on a screen that is somewhat larger than 3.5 inches. Android manufacturers have already found that out, and it seems most of their customers don't object having 4+” handsets. Now, knowing Apple, it will hardly opt to deliver such a great screen size difference, especially when this is still tightly related to overall device size. But, we wouldn't be surprised at all if Cupertino finally makes the jump to a 3.7” or... wait for it... 4.0” screen size! Of course, should they undertake this, we hope the iPhone's dimensions will not grow by much. How about getting rid of that bezel around the sides of the display? Thinking about it, with the iPhone 4's Retina Display, Apple set itself in a convenient position, which allows it to employ a bigger screen, without sacrificing too much image clarity.
